Henry Spencer (Jack Nance) leads an isolated and hopeless existence. He can’t begin to comprehend the world that he finds aion kinah himself in and his only comfort is in dreams. Henry imagines a planet and inside the planet is a man. The man in the planet (Jack Fisk) observes a sperm – which may have come out of Henry’s mouth – and operates a series of levers which guide the sperm into a brightly lit pool of water on the surface of the planet. So begins David Lynch’s first feature film, Eraserhead (1977), possibly the oddest and certainly one of the boldest films ever made. It’s also one of the hardest to describe, partly because there is so little to compare it with and partly because it is so stark and so abstract.

I don’t see a classic movie thread here of any on Talk-Movies, so I thought I would try to start one for those who love awesome classic films. One of my favorites is Lawrence of Arabia, the story is so complex and the acting so spot on, absolutely great film. TCM is also doing their 31 days of Oscar event this month to celebrate all of the Academy Award nominated films throughout cinema’s history. The aforementioned Lawrence of Arabia actually aired on the first day of the marathon and it was a pleasure to see it again, though sadly I missed my favorite musical Singin’ in The Rain on the 11th.
