Crowne Larry is a Navy veteran who loses his job at a store big-box and decides to enroll in community college. He befriends a group of outcasts, and falls in love with Mercedes Tainot speech teacher.

Crowne Larry was first announced as talking about the city in February 2006. Universal Pictures set up the project as a star vehicle for Tom Hanks with Nia Vardalos hired to write the screenplay about a man going through a career change unexpectedly.
In January 2010, Julia Roberts was elected against Hanks. In the following October, Bryan Cranston joined the cast. Later in the month, shooting began in Los Angeles.
